UniSafety Represents Brazil at the American Safety Conference in Orlando

UniSafety participated in SAFETY25 – The American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) Safety Conference, held in Orlando, Florida, from July 23 to 25. The event is recognized worldwide as a leading forum for technical updates, knowledge exchange, and the presentation of new approaches to accident prevention in industrial environments.
Representing both Brazil and UniSafety, engineer and Managing Partner Guilherme Neto closely followed the conference's main discussions, with a particular focus on machine safety, severe workplace injuries, and emerging international regulatory trends.
"The event is designed so participants can focus on their specific areas of interest. On the very first day, I attended a presentation on machine safety, which is UniSafety's core specialty. It was valuable to understand how the topic is being addressed here and which regulatory proposals are currently under discussion," said Guilherme Neto.
Highlights from the American Safety Conference
Two topics attracted particular attention from the UniSafety team during the conference.
The first was the concept of SIF (Severe Injuries and Fatalities), which focuses on the analysis of serious and fatal workplace accidents that differ from traditional incident patterns.
"This concept has been extensively studied over the past decade, and the emergence of the energy-based approach represents a significant advancement. It helps explain why machine-related accidents do not always follow the same patterns as other occupational incidents," explained Guilherme Neto.
The energy-based approach has already been the subject of numerous scientific publications in the United States and is increasingly being discussed as a new reference framework for preventing machine-related accidents. Another major highlight was NR-12 itself. Brazil's machine safety regulation, which incorporates the use of safety categories in machine safety systems, was cited in several presentations as an effective alternative to the European model based on Performance Level (PL). During technical meetings with specialists from ANSI (American National Standards Institute) and ISO, the Brazilian approach was recognized as technically robust and applicable across a wide range of industrial sectors.
UniSafety also presented its proprietary methodology for risk assessment and quantification in hazardous areas, including environments containing combustible dust, fertilizer processing, and electrical systems. According to Guilherme Neto, adapting assessment methodologies to the specific characteristics of each industrial process is essential, and the company's approach has been well received by professionals from several countries.
"We had the opportunity to present the methodology we developed for hazardous areas, which is particularly important for industries such as fertilizers, food processing, and energy." Concluded.
Other subjects discussed throughout the conference included safety for electric vehicle battery systems, pneumatic and hydraulic safety systems, artificial intelligence applied to machine safety and lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures and best practices
Reflecting on the event, Guilherme Neto added: "Beyond the presentations themselves, networking with engineers and researchers from the United States and other countries provided valuable opportunities to exchange knowledge. We returned with new ideas and, at the same time, with the confidence that Brazilian engineering is performing at a very high level."
